Choosing IT support: what actually matters
- Response time in writing. For a business, ask what "same day" means in their contract — remote within the hour, on site within four? — and whether it covers evenings.
- Backups you can see restored. A provider who cannot show you a test restore is selling hope, not backup. Ask when the last one was done for a client like you.
- Who owns the passwords. Domain registrar, Microsoft 365 admin, router, backup account: they should be in your name, with the provider as a delegated admin, never the other way round.
- Cyber Essentials. The UK government-backed scheme is a reasonable baseline for a provider that touches your systems; ask whether they hold it and can help you get it.
- Data recovery is a separate trade. A dead drive with irreplaceable photos wants a clean-room recovery specialist, not a repair shop that "will try". Ask before anyone opens it.
- Home repairs. A fixed diagnostic fee, a quote before work, and your data left where it was — that is the whole checklist.
