Uckfield, Heathfield and Crowborough are three of the main towns in Wealden District Council’s area, the largest and one of the most rural districts in East Sussex, where roughly two-thirds of the land falls within the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Uckfield has its own railway station, the terminus of the Oxted Line branch that runs north to East Grinstead and on to London Bridge; the line is not electrified between Uckfield and Hurst Green Junction. Heathfield lost its railway station when the old Cuckoo Line closed in the 1960s; the route is now the Cuckoo Trail footpath and cycleway rather than a working line, so the town depends entirely on road access. Crowborough, on high ground towards Ashdown Forest, and the villages scattered between all three towns are typical of Wealden’s rural character, with older, more spread-out properties than in the district’s towns themselves.
