Defintion: open-source
adjective COMPUTING
1. denoting software for which the original source code is made freely available and may be redistributed and modified.
Generically, open source refers to a program in which the source code is available to the general public for use and/or modification from its original design free of charge, i.e., open.
Open source code is typically created as a collaborative effort (an Open Community approach) in which like minded programmers improve upon their code, ammending and publically sharing their technological advances and changes freely within and outside the group. Open source sprouted from within the technology community as a response to frustration from proprietary software dominance and monopoly's owned by corporations, like Microsoft, Apple, Citrix and Vmware. These compaanies typically have 'borrowed' or bought ideas from other vendors and suppliers, brand them as their own and hold back secrets and bugs or security issues from the public and industry for pure commercial gain (Closed)
